Hackers Didn’t Break In. They Were Let In.
The ASOS data breach reveals how one convincing impersonation can put any business at risk.
October 15, 2026 | 1-minute read
One convincing impersonation. One stolen login. Customer data exposed.
That’s how the recent ASOS cyberattack unfolded. And the same tactic could put your business at risk.
The Attack Started With Trust, Not Technology
In October 2026, fashion retailer ASOS confirmed that attackers impersonated a trusted contact to obtain an employee’s login credentials.
Those credentials were then used to access customer information stored on third-party platforms. Some customer names and contact details were exposed, although ASOS reported that customer passwords and payment card information were not accessed.

The Real Weakness? Human Trust.
This is social engineering: manipulating someone into sharing sensitive information or granting access.
Attackers don’t always need sophisticated hacking tools. Sometimes, a convincing email, phone call, or message is enough to exploit someone’s trust.
Your Business Doesn’t Have to Be Famous to Be a Target
All types of businesses are susceptible to these same tactics.
Employees could be tricked into trusting a message or unwittingly sharing credentials, exposing company systems and sensitive information.
The question is: Would your employees recognize the warning signs?
